Hi, I'm Dr. Melissa Crum and I have worked with mission-driven organizations for over a decade. Emotional intelligence, communication skills, and adaptability are integral components of effective leadership. My expertise in inclusive practices allows me to provide meaningful support to leaders in their journey to team development, collaboration, and cooperative decision-making. By creating a brave space for dialogue and growth, I help leaders recognize their strengths, address biases, and foster inclusive practices within their teams and departments. To achieve this, I operate from Angeles Arrien's Four-Fold Way, which is the foundation for my coaching approach.

1. Show up and choose to be present

Central to my coaching methodology is being fully present in each session. I create an environment where the coach and coachee feel heard, understood, and valued. Feedback has highlighted my ability to match energy appropriately, maintain focus, and demonstrate keen listening skills. By modeling vulnerability and actively engaging with the client from the outset, I establish rapport and trust, allowing for open and meaningful dialogue.

If I could provide one word that captures the impact of this coaching relationship it would be- transformational. Dr. Crum helped me to break down my thoughts and challenged me to consider what is within my control. Once I knew that, I was able to outline exactly what I need to show up as my best self. I have already received feedback at work about my ability to communicate my thoughts and needs clearly in the moment, when I was not doing that consistently before developing that skill with her.

2. Pay attention to what has heart and meaning

Reflective listening with empathy is a cornerstone of my coaching practice. I excel at succinctly paraphrasing the coachee's words with measured empathy, validating their experiences and emotions. Employing various modalities, such as role-play, charting, and drawing, I facilitate deeper exploration and assist the client in identifying actions aligned with their goals and values.

3. Tell the truth without blame or judgment

I foster an environment of authenticity and honesty, where the client feels brave enough to explore their thoughts and feelings without fear of judgment. I encourage the client to delve deeper into their authentic insights through empathetic questioning and reflective dialogue, leading to transformative revelations and growth opportunities. By refraining from blame or judgment, I affirm the client's confidence and empower them to continue their journey of self-discovery.

This coaching experience provided me with several different frameworks to discuss challenging situations. As a leader I feel more equipped to have difficult conversations that will lead to a defined outcome. I also feel more self-aware and know what questions to ask myself when I am approaching a situation. 

4. Be open, not attached, to the outcome

I approach coaching with an openness and flexibility mindset, recognizing that the journey towards inclusivity and growth is dynamic and multifaceted. Through open-ended questions and thought partnership, I guide the client in exploring various possibilities and perspectives. I maintain curiosity and adaptability, allowing the coaching process to unfold organically and authentically.
